Frequently Asked Questions

What type of detergent should I use to wash my rug?

Use a mild, low pH detergent that does not contain whitening agents or conditioners which can damage the natural fibers and colors. We find that baby detergents (we like Dreft) are typically low in pH. We do not recommend using Tide or detergents like it when washing the rug. Because we use all non-toxic and natural dyes, harsher detergents like Tide can cause the colors to run.

What washing machine setting should I use?

Our rugs should be washed on the delicate cycle using the coolest temperature setting. We also recommend running an extra rinse cycle to ensure that the detergent is fully washed from the rug to prevent any buildup. Placing a rug with detergent residue in the dryer can cause staining and discoloration.

Can I dry my rug?

Yes! The rugs can be dried on the lowest temperature setting and we recommend drying the rug to remove any creases that may occur from being folded during shipping. Tumble the rug dry on delicate for up to a few hours. Because our rugs are made of natural fibers, they may take longer to dry. If the rug is still damp after drying for a few hours, you can lay it flat to air dry overnight.

Will the rug shed?

Because it is made of solely natural materials, the rug may release lint or loose threads. During initial use and following the first few washes, sweeping the rug with a stiff broom in the direction of the pile can help to remove any lint. After these initial washes, you should no longer see significant loose threads or lint on the rug and should begin using a vacuum for cleaning.

For any long strands, trim with scissors — never pull on a loose strand.

The corners of my rug are curling after being washed- is this normal?

Due to the natural fibers used in the rug, the edges can stretch and curl slightly. They should flatten out for a few days after watching. If the curling persists, you can run an iron over the edges on low heat to flatten the edges back down.

Will my rug match the size dimensions exactly?

Because our rugs are handmade with each piece cut by hand, the size may vary slightly (we love that they are truly one of a kind!). While the size may vary slightly, it should not be a significant variation. A small amount of shrinking is also normal. If you are using a non-slip rug pad, you may be able to cut it to size once the rug has been washed and dried (check the instructions for the non-slip pad you're using just to be sure!).

Will my rug shrink?

Since our rugs are made of natural fibers, a small amount of shrinking is normal and to be expected. If you are using a non-slip rug pad, you may be able to cut it to size once the rug has been washed and dried (check the instructions for the non-slip pad you're using just to be sure!). The total amount of shrinking should not be more than around 7%.
