From a star-filled ceiling to bedtime stories in the glider, every detail of Lily's nursery has a story behind it. We caught up with stylist Olivia Barrett to chat about designing a space that feels personal, settling into life with three-month-old Lily, and the products and traditions that have become part of their everyday.
Not every nursery begins with a Pinterest board. In Olivia Barrett's case, it all started with an aviator mobile. From there, one meaningful detail led to another, resulting in a room that's as full of personality as it is stars.
Truthfully, I went into designing the space without a specific theme or vision in mind. The room already had beautiful yellow curtains, which gave us a lovely foundation.
Once I chose the Aviator Mobile, the room naturally evolved. My dad's family has a long history in aviation, so I was immediately drawn to it. From there, the star mural on the ceiling and a few moon-inspired prints completed our little sky-themed nursery.
At three months, walking into a room and having her smile because she recognizes me and my husband is maybe the greatest feeling of unconditional love we've ever known. We also managed to capture her first giggles on camera!
As overwhelming as parenthood can be, those smiles and laughs make every hard moment worth it.
Watching her personality emerge has been incredible. The little sounds she makes while eating, the way she catches your eye and smiles, the expressions that are already uniquely hers.
She also looks so much like me that it's funny recognizing my own folded lower lip in her little hunger cries from my baby photos.
It's more than fun—it's surreal. Sometimes I look at her and still can't believe she's here, and that we made her. Parenthood happens in a nanosecond, and it's an indescribable feeling until you've experienced it yourself.
Lily's room has a few funny corners and alcoves, so there wasn't much wall space for a mural. I loved the Star Sign Wall Mural and thought the ceiling was actually the perfect place for it. It feels like exactly where it belongs.
Cozy, bright, and thoughtful.
Without question, it's the Dawn Glider and Ottoman.
It's become our little corner for her evening bottle and bedtime story. It's also been so special revisiting all the books our parents read to us growing up. Goodnight Moon, Love You Forever...it's funny how differently you read them and view them as a parent.
I'm so excited to take her to Georgian Bay in Ontario. I've been spending my summers there since I was nine days old. My parents took me to a remote island, thirty minutes from the mainland, when I was just over a week old, whereas my front porch currently looks like an Amazon fulfillment center.
It's such a special place. One wall in our cottage has all of our heights marked from the time when my siblings and I were babies. I can't wait to add Lily's first measurement to that wall and continue the tradition.
