When co-founder and CMO of Nestig, Sara Adam Slywka, and her family decided to start spending weekends at their retreat in upstate New York, she knew she wanted her two-year-old son Henry’s space to feel completely different from his room in their modern Manhattan rental. Sara takes us on a tour of her Ulster County nursery — and shares some happy news.
I knew this space would need to serve a more revolving set of needs than Henry's first nursery- being a guest room, nursery for the new baby, as well as a space for Henry. I wanted to create a space that was versatile yet still reflected our surroundings and Henry's interests.
Like a bright layered flower garden
The farmhouse style of the home, along with the additional space, allowed her to lean into her eclectic personal style, incorporating elements that make a room feel warm with unexpected touches. To make the space feel like a flower garden without learning too feminine, she used Floral Rain Wallpaper on the walls as well as the ceiling to envelope the space with a cohesive print. It brings a very delicate, cottage vibe that allows for easy mixing with the bolder prints in the bedding, which she can swap out as the needs of the room evolve with her family.
This room has a few special pieces! My grandfather collected model tractors, and when he passed, he gave one to each of his grandchildren, so the tractor has a special home here. My mother-in-law also unearthed a very sweet airplane lamp from the nursery she designed for my husband 35 years ago, so that lamp also made it into the room and is a favorite of Henry's!
Sara leads the creative direction for each new Nestig collection, and the product development team worked on styles that perfectly complemented her vision for the space.
The 3-in-1 Wave Crib in Midnight adds drama and ensures the space doesn’t veer too sweet.
The Briar Shelf in Walnut feels like an antique handed down alongside the heirlooms it holds.
Cove Daybed & Trundle, currently decked out in gingham and a horse-themed bedding, is the perfect spot for cozy stories as well as accommodating guests–being able to swap out the bedding makes it more flexible style-wise than a sofa.
When do you call it a night?
Around 8–with a wide margin of error
What's the routine right now?
Jammies, a book with mom or dad, and then a book (or 4) for the crib. He loves to leave the lights on to read, so we have a lightbulb with a timer that we set for 30 minutes for him to be able to read in bed.
His favorite bedtime story? Yours?
He is in love with Richard Scarry's Cars and Trucks and Things that Go. Unfortunately for me, it is a 60-page book, and he is getting more and more vigilant when he sees me skip pages. My favorite are the Tabitha Paige Our Little Adventures – they are short and sweet, with the sweetest illustrations.
What is the first thing you do after leaving his room after bedtime?
Park on the couch and scroll TikTok to unwind
